Train
People are often surprised to learn there’s a train station on campus. It is a little out of the way….
Trains are a fairly reliable way to get to and from uni as they’re pretty cheap and come regularly. They’re also nicely air conditioned in summer!
The station is called Warabrook, it’s on the Hunter Line. For timetables go to the CityRail website

Drive
Getting to uni by car is a chancy business, especially early in the year. There aren’t anywhere near enough car spaces, so don’t drive if you can avoid it. It’s not uncommon to spend ½ an hour or more driving around looking for a park.Only park in marked parking spaces and make sure you buy and display a parking voucher. The parking inspectors are ruthless, especially at the start of the year.
.
One of the cool things people have started doing is putting their vouchers back in the parking machine when they leave so someone else can park free. You can get 6 or 12 month parking stickers from any of the Student Hubs
.
There are also a few free car parks that often have space. They are a bit further away but if you don’t mind a bit of a walk they’re tops! They’re marked on the map with a P

Bus
Buses are a good way to get to and from uni.
They come and go regularly, they go all over Newcastle, you don’t have to find a park and they’re relatively cheap. Especially if you have a student travel concession sticker. (What you haven’t got yours yet? Head to a Student Hub!)
.
The Uni website has a listing of all the main bus services that’ll bring you to uni (and their timetables). To see it click here. But the timetables may be a bit out of date. So we suggest using the uni website to look up your bus number and then find the most recent timetable here

Bike
This is a great way to get to uni as you can ride right to your class. There are bike racks all over the place.
WARNING bikes get stolen on campus a lot. Buy yourself a strong chain and make sure it’s long enough to go through both wheels of your bike. Or get yourself an old junker that no one is going to want to steal…
Don’t forget to grab a helmet while you’re at it. There’s no point studying hard if you go and get a brain injury when some idiot motorist knocks you down…
.
Here’s a map of cycle paths in the Newcastle area. It’s brought to you by NUBUG

Shuttle Bus
Uni security runs a shuttle bus service around Callaghan Campus and the surrounding suburbs.
In the morning and afternoons it travels a set circuit around campus, between the colleges, the train station and various spots on campus.
And after 6:30pm you can call the bus to come get you and drop you home (provided home is in Shortland, Birmingham Gardens, Jesmond, North Lambton or Waratah West).
This is particularly useful in winter when it gets dark really early. Do use this service as Newcastle Uni campus is not particularly safe after dark.
.
To arrange a pick up call 0407 951 470 or 27114 from a university phone
For more details go to the uni security site
