For believers, this can be confusing and severely test our faith. For some nonbelievers, the presence of evil in the world is a barrier to faith – how could a good God allow suffering?

The Old Testament book of Habakkuk confronts these issues head on as the prophet asks God what he is going to do about the problem of evil.

This was  a sermon preached by Jonathan Edwards in the 1740s, during a time often called the Great Awakening, in order to awaken complacent hearers – people who had happily sat in church, had gone along with the crowd, were upstanding moral citizens, and were on the comfortable road to eternal condemnation because they had refused to come to God for forgiveness.

“They deserve to be cast into hell; so that divine justice never stands in the way, it makes no objection against God’s using his power at any moment to destroy them. Yea, on the contrary, justice calls aloud for an infinite punishment of their sins. Divine justice says of the tree that brings forth such grapes of Sodom, “Cut it down, why cumbereth it the ground?“ Luke 13:7. The sword of divine justice is every moment brandished over their heads, and it is nothing but the hand of arbitrary mercy, and God’s mere will, that holds it back.”

Edwards didn’t hold back! But how seriously do we take sin today? As Christians, do we marginalise it, or do we take God’s mercy for granted?

These are questions worth asking, and worth pursuing because our God is a holy God. And not just holy, but holy, holy, holy!

This is the second NCS trip to India at the invitation of IGL.

 

The India Gospel League are committed to seeing church planters around India be trained in the bible.

 

A unique link between this Indian organisation and evangelical Christians around Australia has formed. Through this partnership, Aussies head to India and teach Moore College correspondence courses to the pastors who can not afford to be trained in a formal setting in India.

 

Over two weeks we’ll be teaching different courses (Old Testament 1 and Ephesians) in two towns, training around 100 church planters and evangelists.

I’m listening to Leon Morris preaching on ‘unity’ from Ephesians (NTE 1979!), and it’s funny that not all that much changes. He still punches home that we’re saved by grace, that Jesus has destroyed all barriers of separation, and he even has a stab at the average hygiene levels of the male members of the audience…
